Job Purpose
The post-holder will provide an efficient secretarial and administrative service on behalf of senior academic staff based within the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences. The post requires a strong sense of initiative, the ability to multi-task and effective communication skills. The working relationship between the post-holder and the academic staff and students based in the Institute is of key importance to the success of the group, its efficient operation, at local and national level.
The postholder will be involved in providing dedicated support to allocated senior academic staff and ensuring effective administrative support to research, teaching, students and other academic work. The role is varied and includes maintaining diaries, databases and spreadsheets, typing and archiving of research publications and other correspondence, photocopying and filing, preparing accurate medical scientific documents from databases and spreadsheets, collating information and liaising closely with other administrative staff based within the Institute and University. The post-holder should have a flexible approach to working hours, together with the ability to work on their own initiative unsupervised.
Person Specification
- • Educated to GSE A Level or equivalent including English Language or proven experience.
- • RSA Level II word processing or equivalent experience
- • Previous experience as personal secretary or administrator.
- • Ability to show initiative and prioritise work tasks, whilst working under pressure.
- • Working knowledge of Windows based applications, specifically Microsoft Office including Word and Excel, and working knowledge of databases.
- • Proven written and verbal communication skills including a professional telephone manner
- • Positive attitude towards flexible working activity, according to day-to-day workload
- • Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to work under pressure and deal with confidential and sensitive information appropriately
- • Good presentation and time keeping.
- • Previous experience of working the further education sector or NHS would be advantageous but not essential
