The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled neuroscientist with a strong background in neuroimmunology to join our Boston-based early drug discovery team. Position is for a lab-based biologist who will generally be responsible for supporting the identification and validation of novel targets. The primary responsibilies will include the design and execution of both in vitro experiments and in vivo studies – applying biochemical, cellular/molecular, histological and imaging techniques – to drive toward a deeper understanding of disease pathogenesis, establish novel models thereof, and enable mechanism of action assessments for candidate therapeutics. The Senior Scientist will be an active participant in the critical scientific dialogue that supports our mission of early discovery in support of the Merck Neuroscience pipeline.

The responsibilities of the Senior Scientist include:

- Characterize the complex interplay between neurons, glial cells and disease pathogenesis in animals models of neurodegeneration.
- Collaborate to develop disease relevant cellular models using primary neurons and glia.
- Analyze, summarize and communicate data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
- Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide internal research.
- Collaborate with members across diverse functional areas, including but limited to colleagues from genetics, medicinal chemistry, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology, chemical biology and translational sciences.
- Work with external academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations

Qualifications

Education:

- PhD in Neuroscience or a related field with 3+ years of postdoctoral training.

Required:

- Strong background in neuroimmunology with an emphasis on neurodegenerative disorders, preferable Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
- Experience generating neuronal, glial and organotypic/slice cultures as model systems.
- Outstanding and broad in vitro/ex vivo skill set and assay development – including protein/RNA preps, western blots, ELISA, histology methods and transcriptional profiling.
- Expertise with employing in vivo longitudinal imaging methods to animals models of neurodegeneration.
- Strong background in target identification and target validation decision-making.
- Understanding of general principles of pharmacology (small molecule and biologics) to support building in vitro to in vivo relationships.
- Record of innovative thinking to champion new ideas and solve problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of study reports, presentations and able to contribute to manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Preferred:

- Understanding of assay development principles for high throughput screening.
- Ability to perform high content microscopy and quantitative image analysis on multiple platforms.
- Experience with viral vector delivery to CNS to support novel model generation and explore mechanistic hypotheses of neurodegeneration.
