Job Details

On Ecole Centrale Nantes and LHEEA research department
Ecole Centrale Nantes
Ecole Centrale Nantes (www.ec-nantes.fr) is one of the top French Schools of Engineering, highly-selective technical universities awarding M. Sc. Engineering and PhD degrees. It offers a large range of programmes at graduate and post-graduate level as well as professional development courses.
Ecole Centrale Nantes hosts more than 2200 students on its campus. It has a staff of 400 including 150 professors, lecturers and research scientists working in one of its 6 research departments.
Research at Ecole Centrale Nantes is carried out in highly competitive internationally recognised laboratories. Ecole Centrale Nantes believes in an interdisciplinary approach and encourages a spirit of adventure to solve 21st centuries’ major challenges: Manufacturing, Energy transition and Health.
Ecole Centrale Nantes is located in the beautiful city of Nantes in western France, 2 hours away from Paris by train.

LHEEA Lab.
The LHEEA lab. (http://lheea.ec-nantes.fr), research department on Hydrodynamics, Energetics and Atmospheric Environment is a joint research unit with the French national research centre CNRS. The LHEEA lab has a staff of 130 including 75 professors, lecturers and research scientists with long term or short term positions and 35 PhD students. The LHEEA lab. carries out scientific research in the fields of marine engineering, automotive engines and urban atmosphere. Research is carried out using analytical, numerical and experimental methods. LHEEA operates unique experimental facilities including:
•    A large oceanic wave tank: 50m x 30m x 5m basin with 48 independently controlled flap-type wavemakers.
•    A full scale test site, SEM-REV, dedicated to the testing of marine renewable energies prototypes. The site is located 20kms offshore. It is grid-connected with a 8MW electrical cable.
•    A 150m-long towing tank, a wind tunnel, automotive engine test beds.

Position type: Full Professor
Position title: Experimental free-surface hydrodynamics
Position location: Hydrodynamics, Interfaces and Interaction research group, LHEEA research department (ECN / CNRS), Ecole Centrale Nantes
Profile: Associate Professor or higher
Contract: permanent position. Salary depending on experience
Application deadline: March 30, via email, see below section "Application process"
Application process: French national system, see below section "Application process"

Teaching activity
The candidate will develop his/her teaching activity within the Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics teaching department, within different curriculums (French and international master degrees).
He/she will give courses related to fluid mechanics, free-surface hydrodynamics, experimental methods, ocean engineering, marine renewable energies, etc. The candidate will also develop online courses to reinforce the visibility of Ecole Centrale Nantes on the topic. He/she will also be involved in the management of teaching activities.

Research activity: Experimental modeling of free-surface hydrodynamic flows
Research activity will be carried out within the research group on Hydrodynamics, Interface and Interactions (H2I) of LHEEA, counting 27 staff including 9 post-docs and 11 PhD students. This research group studies free-surface/interface hydrodynamic flows and interactions with structures, especially in marine environment but not only. The research group has a strong expertise in development of numerical methods specialized in the local solution of these flows, and in wave-structure interactions. Part of the group activities is dedicated to the experimental study of these flows and interactions, taking advantage of the large facilities of LHEEA. A large part of the research in the group is in strong interaction with marine engineering industries and SMEs.
The candidate will develop his/her research activities within the Hydrodynamics, Interfaces and Interactions (H2I) research group of LHEEA research department. He/she will strengthen and widen the experimental activity of the group, especially in link with its main research topic, namely wave-structure interaction. The candidate will bring a deep physical expertise in the domain (hydrodynamic impact, hydroelasticity, gravity waves, two-phase flows, accurate flow measuring...). He/she will develop his/her activities in complementarity with the numerical developments performed in the group, and in close connection with the operational staff of the large hydrodynamic experimental facilities of LHEEA. These facilities include especially a wave basin of international stature (50m X 30m X 5m) and a towing tank of national stature (140m long). This recruitment is explicitly meant to increase the scientific reputation and the publications of the research group in the experimental field.
In addition to his (her) specific assignments, the candidate will be stongly involved in applications to European, national or regional research project calls, developing strong collaborations with academic and industrial partners at national and international levels.

Specific skills
A scientific expertise of international level on experimental modeling of free-surface flows is expected, as well as a significant experience in management of research projects, groups or networks. The candidate will also demonstrate the following skills:
-    Initiative,
-    Communication skills,
-    Research supervision,
-    Mulidisciplinarity.

Keywords: experimental modeling, free-surface hydrodynamics, ocean engineering, marine renewable energies
