Job Details
The FAPESP research grant 2015/22814-5 "Heart and Cancer: New paradigms of diagnosis and treatment" is receiving, until April 10th, 2017, applications for a postdoctoral fellowship.
This project is coordinated by Professor Carlos Eduardo Negrão, head of The Rehabilitation and Exercise Physiology Unit of the Heart Institute (InCor) - Medical School of the University of São Paulo (USP), and full professor of the School of Physical Education and Sports of USP.
The project aims to study new therapeutic paradigms based on cellular and molecular principles, drugs and aerobic exercise for the treatment of cardiovascular disease associated with cancer, with special attention to cardiac and skeletal muscles toxicity.
The main focus of the subproject associated with the postdoctoral fellowship is to analyze the effects of aerobic exercise training on skeletal muscle metabolism and trophicity during the progression of cancer cachexia in different experimental models. In addition, it is intended to explore the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of aerobic exercise training on cancer cachexia and to identify whether proteins modulated by exercise training on different animal models of cancer cachexia can be used as markers of cachexia progression in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma. This is of particular interest since cachexia incidence in these patients at diagnosis is approximately 45%.
Candidates must hold a recent doctorate degree (obtained up to 7 years, in any country) in one of the following areas: Biochemistry, Cellular/Molecular Biology, Physical Education, Sport Sciences or related fields, and they also should have a scientific production compatible with their career stage. It is crucial that candidates have experience with aerobic exercise training in animal models, histological and biochemical analyzes of the skeletal and cardiac muscles, evaluation of mitochondrial metabolism, cell culture and molecular/cellular biology techniques. Experience with cancer models and genomics will also be appreciated. Excellent oral and written communication (English and Portuguese) and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams are required.
Applicants must send a motivation letter (up to 1 page, including presentation and description of previous research, research interests and skills), full curriculum vitae (up to 2 pages) and names for personal references (with contact information) for: aacamargo@mochsl.org.br and pcbrum@usp.br.
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP's Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 6.819,30 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
