Director High Tech Transdisciplinary Research

Job Details

  • Lead innovative high tech research across an organisation
  • Build strong partnerships with industry, governments and communities
  • Be part of an ambitious and exciting transformation programme

  • Unitec Institute of Technology is currently transforming to remain at the forefront of rapid changes in the education environment and deliver better outcomes for students, communities, and public and private enterprise. This Transformation Programme replaces Faculties with Networks and redefines tertiary education to a more contemporary, collaborative and externally engaged model where technology is front and centre.

Within this new structure, the Director will hold a key role in strategically leading an ecosystem of high-tech innovation and research commercialisation across Unitec; while driving connections with business, investors, government, other tertiary institutions and the community, both nationally and internationally. The Network currently encompasses Unitec's existing research centres including the Cyber Security Research Centre (CSRC) and the Centre for Computational Intelligence for Environmental Engineering (CIEE) and it is envisaged that the Network will evolve to include a wide range of disciplines across the organisation. This is an opportunity for the right individual to establish a world renowned high tech transdisciplinary research network and innovation incubator, addressing social issues and driving economic growth in New Zealand.

Reporting to the Executive Director - Partnerships, the position carries an appointment at Professorial level and requires a PhD qualification in a relevant field of ICT. The new Director will demonstrate a passion for vocational learning, hold a substantial and current applied research portfolio and display a commitment to advancing research through consultancy contracts with external stakeholders. A high level of gravitas and international credibility in the ICT field, along with strong management and leadership experience in the development, implementation and operation of large research teams and programmes, will be essential. The successful candidate will be a charismatic deal-maker with outstanding relationship management skills, energy and entrepreneurial zeal, with the ability to influence and collaborate across organisational boundaries while responding to change through innovative, agile and flexible thinking.

Based in the vibrant and growing city of Auckland, Unitec is the largest institute of technology in New Zealand with over 20,000 students based across two campuses. Recently, Auckland was again ranked as the third most liveable city in the world by Mercer's 2016 Quality of Living Survey.
