Job Details
The Securing Multidisciplinary UndeRstanding and Predication of Hiatus and Syrge events (SMURPHS) consortium comprises the Universities of Leeds (Lead Partner), Edinburgh, Exeter, Reading, Oxford, East Anglia and Southampton; the Met Office; the National Oceanography Centre and the British Antarctic Survey. SMURPHS is funded by NERC. The central aim of SMURPHS is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms and causes of decadal trends and variability in climate and close important knowledge gaps.
Based at the University of Leeds, you will be expected to contribute to the ongoing research in atmospheric science within the School. Your work will lead to significant publications in atmospheric and climate science and you will also present your research at national and international meetings. You will communicate outcomes of the research to relevant stakeholders outside academia.
You must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in a quantitative physical science, such as Atmospheric Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics or Engineering. You must have experience in the setup and use of chemistry climate models, methods of energy budget analysis, a good understanding of drivers of precipitation change and observation-based datasets. You should be willing to collaborate actively with partners in the UK and Europe, including research placements with selected partners. You will be used to programming on a unix/linux operating system and have excellent communication skills.
