Job Details

Do you like making?  Want to work with students to bring their ideas to life?  Read on to unleash your potential!

An opportunity has emerged for someone who is passionate about building New Zealand’ prosperity for its people by unleashing the creative and entrepreneurial capabilities of the next generation of University of Auckland graduates.

The space

The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is launching an iconic multi-functional space for creative, cross sector and cross-disciplinary innovation. This space has been conceived as an inspirational flagship for making, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The space has been conceptualised to engage students from all faculties to ideate, make, and commercialise. The space’s integrated programme will combine mentoring, workshops and engagement opportunities to help students prototype and build, and eventually launch and grow their ventures.

The new space will be multi-purpose with flexible areas for events, workshops and meetings; have a range of making and prototyping equipment such as 3-D printers, vinyl cutters, CAD stations, CNC routers; and working spaces equipped with whiteboards. The University has identified a high profile street-front site on campus that is ideally suited for this purpose.

The role

The successful candidate is passionate about developing makers, innovators and entrepreneurs. You will work with our team to make the new space iconic, welcoming and vibrant.

You will manage and maintain the maker space equipment and environment for students to use safely. You will lead, supervise, train and support a team of student staff to ensure we build a safe, enjoyable and engaging environment for all who visit the space. Health and safety is at the core of our operations, and you will be responsible for ensuring polices are created and adhered to. You will contribute to maintaining workplace Health & Safety to ensure the safety of all staff, students, visitors and others we interact with. You will ensure all compliance requirements (under HSNO Act, HSE Act and MPI regulations) are met in areas of responsibility.

You will develop and maintain an environment for staff and students that stimulates good communication, knowledge sharing, and collaboration. You will also review systems and practices on a regular basis and manage improvements to the technical service area as required.

Working with the student staff, and the Programmes Coordinator, you will design new programmes to encourage wide and frequent use of the maker space. You need to have strong facilitation skills to be able to run ‘making’ workshops. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills are essential as you will be working with a broad range of audiences and stakeholders.

 Who we are looking for

Ideally with experience in an academic maker space, you will have a passion for making, and experience in assisting others to bring their ideas to life. Experience of leading making workshops, strong presentation skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a large team are also key for success in this role. You will need to have the willingness and flexibility to work outside the traditional 9am-5pm hours to ensure the profile and promotion of the Centre and its activities.

This is a full time, permanent role.

The University

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading University, and Australasia’s most innovative university – as ranked by Reuters.  In 2014 the University of Auckland was acknowledged by acclaimed Massachusetts Institute of Technology as one of the “Top 5” most highly regarded entrepreneurial universities.

The University’s position is supported by the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship which has been established to support, profile and be the hub for innovation and entrepreneurial programmes and activities.  For over a decade, the Centre has created courses and extra-curricular activities promoting innovation and entrepreneurship including those of its highly rated Velocity Entrepreneurship programme.

The University is committed to meeting its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi and achieving equity outcomes for staff and students in a safe, inclusive and equitable environment.  For further information on services for Māori, Pacific, women, LGBTI, equity groups, parenting support and flexible work go to www.equity.auckland.ac.nz.

Applications close: Thursday 13th April 2017.
