The Institute of Applied Health Research based within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham are seeking to appoint a Professor of Global Health. This is a new post which will generate a program of health service delivery research with national and international reach.
The appointee will collaborate with senior academic staff to further the University’s ambitions in global research and will lead cross-campus activities focussing on improving human health and welfare.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an individual to provide strategic leadership in an exciting and vibrant environment. In order to deliver the requirements of this role the appointee will require a strong track record in leading collaborative research, specifically in relation to applied health research methodology.

This is a crucial strategic post for the University for which a competitive salary and package will be offered. A clinically qualified appointee is expected to hold an honorary consultant contract with a local NHS Trust or Public Health England. Person Specification Undergraduate qualification in a relevant subject (clinical or non-clinical)
Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area
Member of relevant Professional bodies
• Excellent national and international reputation in research methodology
• Experience of providing expert advice to colleagues, clinical researchers, clinicians and external bodies
• Substantial experience of initiating, developing and delivering clinical and service delivery health research
• Strong research reputation with publications in international peer reviewed journals
• Academic profile nationally and internationally, with the potential for (or ongoing) research collaborations
• Proven success in research leadership, with experience across both High, and Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC)
• Significant success in raising external research funding
• Experience on journal editorial boards and grant awarding bodies
• Experience of delivering academic teaching
• Experience of supervision of doctoral and masters students through to timely completion
• Experience of contributions towards both UG and PG education
• Detailed knowledge of applied health research methodology
• Extensive experience of liaison with clinicians, service managers and policy makers.
• Senior management experience and aptitude for work within a senior team
• Experience of and aptitude for initiating and promoting internal and external collaborations in order to achieve the University ambition to lead this area
• Evidence of substantial networks and external influence with key stakeholders in global health
• Dynamic leader who can establish a clear vision and inspire the commitment and trust of others
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Able to demonstrate strong track record in leading collaborative research
• Demonstrates honesty and integrity
• Able to respond to and cope with change
