Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis

The CMM is The University of Queensland's electron and X-ray microscopy and microanalysis core facility and the Queensland node of the National Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Network (AMMRF). The platforms goals are to facilitate and provide research excellence through a focus on providing world-class facilities matched with an equally high level of expertise thereby meeting the characterisation requirements of local and national researchers and industry. It does this via a concept of supporting discovery from user inception of experiments to publication/outcomes through excellence in consultation, training, measurement and finally analysis.

The CMM comprises 26 academic, research, technical and administrative staff supporting a diverse range of instrument platforms including electron microscopy and microanalysis, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy and novel imaging modalities. The CMM operates on four main sites on the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland.

The role

The successful candidate will assist and develop the needed hardware and software environment in collaboration with UQ-IT and national high-performance computing facilities. You will develop a data management plan as well as provide advice in relation to the analysis and visualisation of CMM data to the staff and for our users.

You will work collaboratively with CMM staff and users in providing data management, analysis and visualisation expertise to support the research projects making use of the CMM's facilities. This engagement will require leadership in data management, database and data-processing pipelines and occur at a range of levels, including: providing advice and consulting; designing and delivering training modules; support via commercial software packages or collaboration in developing and implementing custom algorithms and workflows with UQ IT expertise.

The appointee will additionally facilitate access by CMM users to high-performance computational facilities at UQ and nationally where appropriate; promote CMM activities to the scientific community (AMMRF), including engaging with the National Imaging Facility (NIF), the Australian Synchrotron Facility and ideally develop an independent research profile in image processing or a related area.

The person

Applicants should possess qualifications in relevant disciplines and demonstrate achievement in data management, workflow processing, analysis and visualisation. You should also have knowledge of commercial products such as AMIRA/AVIZO or Imaris or DM3 and open-source such as ImagJ, Fiji, IMOD, SerialEM or similar as well as demonstrated competency in C/C++ and one or more scripting languages.

Remuneration

This is a full-time continuing appointment at Academic Research level B. The remuneration package will be in the range $92,142.74 - $109,419.20 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $107,807.01 - $128,020.46 p.a.).
