Job Purpose

A Clinical Lecturer posts in general surgery is available. It is envisaged that a successful candidate would remain in post until they reach CCT (plus 6 months) or for a period of four years (whichever is sooner), subject to satisfactory annual review. This post will provide opportunity for higher and advanced sub-specialist specialist training in general surgery alongside research and a contribution to teaching. The clinical duties of the post will be based in West Midlands Higher Surgical training scheme for general surgery, enabling the appointees to coordinate clinical and research based training and practice. The post holder will have responsibilities for both inpatient and outpatient care, in addition to teaching and assessment of medical students and postgraduate students.

Clinical and academic training will be provided for the lecturer in a specialist interest in any of the general surgical sub specialities, including upper and lower gastro intestinal surgery, breast surgery, transplantation, hepatobilary and vascular surgery.

Research training is a key component of this appointment with 50% of timetable activity allocated for this purpose. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will undertake a programme of research which may be clinical, translational or basic science. Co-location of the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) and the University of Birmingham (UoB) on the same site provides outstanding opportunities to develop collaborations between basic scientists and clinicians. The Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU), Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) and Primary Care Clinical Trials Unit provide substantial support for clinical and translational research across all surgical disciplines. The Birmingham Surgical Trials Consortium (BSTC) funded by Royal College of Surgeons has recently been established and will develop a portfolio of surgical trials and will benefit from the NIHR Diagnostic Test Evaluation Unit, the Health Economics Unit and the Evidence Synthesis Group. The Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) is a new £24 million investment from central government, UoB and UHB which opened in 2016 and is the flagship for translational research on the campus over the medium and longer term. Of the five floors, one will be devoted to cancer research and the second one for stratified medicine activity.

By way of example, the Academic Department of (GI) Surgery lies within the School of Cancer Sciences. Surgical trials activity is a particular focus of the unit fostered by close links to Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit and CRUK Cancer Clinical Trials Unit. Professor Morton is also the Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre providing outstanding support for early phase trials and translational studies. A licensed bio-repository has been established with the University of Birmingham and provides infrastructure for sample collection, storage and analysis. Biomarker studies are ongoing in breast cancer, early rectal cancer, colitis associated neoplasia, and gastro oesophageal cancer. Located on the same site is the £20 million Institute of Biomedical Research providing access to key technologies such as new generation DNA sequencing, proteomics and metabolomics as well as advanced imaging. In addition to this the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research facility provides the necessary clinical infrastructure to support early phase and translational studies. It is envisaged that a personalised research programme would be developed with the successful candidates.
