Job Purpose

This is a new post, funded by the ERC, investigating the immune response to systemic fungal infections. The post holder will join Robin May’s group, working on a large project focused around pathogenesis mechanisms in human fungal pathogens. In particular, we propose to combine immunology approaches in flow cytometry and cytokine quantification with advanced light microscopy in order to probe immune evasion by Cryptococcus and other fungal pathogens.

The post holder will play a key role in driving forward this project, exploiting their background in human or murine immunology to characterize the fungal/host interaction. They will be expected to undertake an extensive programme of experimentation themselves and to work closely with other members of the group in extending and developing this programme of research. In addition, together with the PI, they will be expected to play a pivotal role in establishing and overseeing the ethical and governance issues associated with murine immunology work. They will also be expected to play an active role in disseminating these findings via publications and conferences as well as in preparing future funding bids to extend the project.

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• High level analytical capability
• Experience of research in infectious disease or immunology fields
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
