Lecturer in Philosophy of Science

The Department of Philosophy intends to make an appointment in philosophy of science broadly construed to include: general philosophy of science, philosophy of specific sciences (all sciences), philosophy of social science (incl. economics, psychology, statistics), rational choice theory, and epistemology of science. The ability and willingness to teach philosophy of economics at UG level is desirable. The University invites applications from candidates who have an outstanding record of research or outstanding research potential in this area.

The Department of Philosophy is known for the high quality of its research and teaching and there are thriving interdisciplinary links with arts, social and natural sciences, law, medicine and medical humanities. In recent years the department has been highly successful in attracting grant income and hosts several active research projects and a number of postdoctoral researchers.

The undergraduate community is diverse with a number of joint honours programmes as well as a large single honours programme and eight successful and growing taught masters programmes. We also have a large number of PhD students, creating a thriving community of students and researchers. A significant number of our recent research students have gone on to prestigious postdoctoral positions and permanent posts. Members of the department are active in various forms of outreach, public engagement, impact work, and widening participation.

The candidate will be expected to develop an internationally excellent independent research programme as well as working in collaboration with other researchers in philosophy and the rest of the University.

Currently in the philosophy department there is a significant group of staff who work in philosophy of science, including philosophy of physics, biology, and medicine, general philosophy of science, metaphysics of science, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of economics, formal epistemology, and rational choice theory. The candidate is expected to work with them to develop research and teaching across the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
