SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

BACKGROUND:
The Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Pretoria offers a four year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOccTher), a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOccTher), which can be gained either through coursework or by virtue of research, a Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and PostgraduateThe Department’s mission is to pursue excellence in research, to engender competent entry-level occupational therapists through quality teaching and learning, to engage in academic service learning in the community and to strengthen international collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for the Department of Occupational Therapy matching the expectations of the UP 2025 Strategic Plan:
- To be a leading research intensive university in Africa;
- To increase the international profile and visibility;
- To pursue excellence in teaching and learning;
- To impact on SA economic and social development;
- To increase access, throughput and diversity;
- To manage the Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A PhD in Occupational Therapy or equivalent;
- Registration with the HPCSA;
- Proven academic capabilities in teaching and learning;
- Publications in accredited journals;
- An appropriate vision for the Department.
Associate Professor: (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus)
- A PhD in Occupational Therapy or equivalent;
- Six years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in Occupational Therapy;
- A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in research and discipline forums;
- Postgraduate supervision up to doctorate level;
- Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- Good presentation skills.
Professor: (same as for Associate Professor, plus)
- Eight years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in Occupational Therapy;
- International standing as researcher;
- Expert knowledge of Occupational Therapy;
- Supervision of postgraduate students and postgraduate student management;
- Experience working in collaborative research teams;
- A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in international research and discipline forums;
- A significant track record of original research, including primary and co-authorships of scientific papers, technical reports and policy documents;
- Previous successful grant applications;
- Scientific peer reviews;
- Research student supervision experience.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Experience in the teaching and learning of undergraduate students at an academic institution;
- Experience in the teaching and learning of postgraduate students at an academic institution;
- Experience in a management position.
- A good track record of publications in accredited journals;
- Proven academic capabilities ( postgraduate supervision, research, service learning and community engagement);
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor/Associate Professor/ Snr Lecturer, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
