DEPARTMENT OF NEW TESTAMENT STUDIES
SENIOR LECTURER/ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR (ONE POST)

In accordance with an agreement between the University of Pretoria and the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) the post has to be filled by a licenced candidate from the Church.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the New Testament;
- Conducting scholarly research in the New Testament and cognate literature;
- Supervising master’s and doctoral students;
- Mentoring students at undergraduate level;
- Performing academic administration and management;
- Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A doctoral degree (or almost completed) with specialisation in the New Testament;
- Ancient Greek at minimum third-year level;
- A proven record of tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate level in New Testament (submission of a teaching portfolio required).
The post level will be determined based on the candidate’s professional portfolio. The following standards are an indication of the applicable post level.
Senior Lecturer:-
At least a master’s degree with further specialisation in New Testament Studies (as demonstrated in the topic of the dissertation and other scientific publications).
- At least one years’ tertiary or related teaching experience;
Associate Professor:
- A doctoral degree with specialisation in New Testament Studies;
- At least three years’ experience in lecturing/involvement in a tertiary education institution;
- Proven research record of academic publications in New Testament Studies;
- National recognition as an established academic;
- Successful supervision of postgraduate students on Masters level.
- A doctoral degree with specialisation in New Testament Studies;
- At least five years’ experience in lecturing/involvement in a tertiary education institution;
- Published research and peer reviewed publications in national and internationally accredited journals;
- International recognition as an established academic;
- Successful supervision of postgraduate students on doctorate level.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Specialised research in any area of New Testament Studies with proven evidence of peer recognition.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- Membership of at least one scholarly society related to New Testament Studies;
- Postgraduate degree in Ancient Greek strongly preferred;
- Proven record of supervision to completion of master’s and doctoral students;
- Community involvement.
The all-inclusive remuneration package for this position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
