The University of Southampton seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the project ‘Pilgrimage into the Past: Walking the Medieval March of Wales’, supported by the AHRC Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement Scheme. The project will develop a new visitor route from Swansea to Hereford, inspired by a real historical pilgrimage, as a way to engage tourists and local communities with the rich medieval heritage of the Wales-England border region. It will draw on research produced by the AHRC-funded research project ‘City Witness: Place and Perspective in Medieval Swansea’ (www.medievalswansea.ac.uk).

The Research Fellow is required to contribute to the development of interpretation resources for the visitor route and to take a leading role in engagement with project partners, stakeholders, and local communities in the Wales-England border region. The role will involve archival work and collaboration with Hereford Cathedral, the main project partner, as well as fieldwork devising and testing the visitor route (this will include walking and driving). The role will also involve working with digital media (though no previous experience is necessary), including development of route maps and multimedia materials.

We seek to attract a researcher who holds a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience* (or is close to completion) in any area relevant to the ‘Pilgrimage into the Past’ project (for example, English, History, Geography, Medieval Studies, Heritage Studies etc.). Applicants should be able to work as part of a team and be passionate about sharing research in innovative ways with non-academic audiences.

The position is fixed term for a period of 12 months, from 01 September 2017. It is a part-time position at 0.4 FTE (14 hours a week).

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be directed to the project PI, Professor Catherine A. M. Clarke (c.a.clarke@soton.ac.uk).

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
