Faculty of Medicine - Histochemistry Research Unit

You are invited to apply for the post of Research Technician to work in the Histochemistry Research Unit (HRU) in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, based at Southampton General Hospital.

The HRU www.southampton.ac.uk/hru is a core facility providing histopathology support for research being undertaken in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton and wider biomedical science community. This is a busy Unit with over 60 users, including postdoctoral research fellows, clinicians, postgraduate and undergraduate students. We offer a range of histopathology services including basic histology, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, image analysis and laser microdissection.

This full-time research technician post, to join the HRU team of four staff, is for two years fixed term, in the first instance. We have recently expanded our laser microdissection capability with a Zeiss MircoBeam LMD system and you would take responsibility for running these laser microdissection systems, developing methodologies for their use, and supporting the development of tissue based mass spectrometry.  You will also contribute to the core support services of the HRU. You should have a  skill level equivalent to HNC, A-Level, or NVQ3 in biological or biomedical sciences, experience of using laser microdissection in life sciences, knowledge of histology and histological techniques and a practical aptitude for technical matters. You should also have excellent communication and organisational skills. Knowledge of tissue based mass spectrometry would be an advantage.

Informal enquiries and visits are encouraged, please contact Dr Susan Wilson S.J.Wilson@southampton.ac.ukor Jon Ward jaw@southampton.ac.uk.
