Duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform general technical and administrative support to the Food Science division.
  • Manage and prepare undergraduate practicals.
  • Order laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Provide research support for postgraduate students in food microbiology.
  • Perform microbial food analyses.
  • Handle the management and maintenance of a bacterial culture collection.
  • Identify and profile bacteria by using phenotypic and genotypic methods.
  • Handle the management and operation of the Biolog/Omnilog identification and phenotype analysis system for internal and external parties.
  • Plan and conduct basic research. 
  • Inherent requirements:

  • BSc (Hons.) in Microbiology and/or Food Science OR a BSc in Microbiology and/or Food Science with at least one year internship in a Microbiology or Food Science laboratory.
  • One year experience in the identification of bacteria using phenotypic and genotypic methods.
  • One year experience in the handling and maintenance of bacteria.
  • Required competencies:

    • Competency in the Microsoft Office Package.
    • Knowledge of Microbiology and Food Science.
    • Analytical abilities.
    • Organised and a keen eye for detail.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Administrative skills.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s parallel-medium and richly diverse working environment.
