Job Details

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute was established in 2007 as the sixth research institute of The University of Queensland. The aim of the Institute is to develop a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease, and to translate that understanding into practical outcomes for patients. Based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital teaching campus in Brisbane, the Institute has almost 300 researchers and students who work closely with clinicians in the areas of cancer, immunology and genomic medicine. UQDI is the largest partner in TRI, and is building major programs in Immunology, Cancer and Genomic Medicine research, with a particular focus on research aimed at development of new treatments.  Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the Institute's web site at http://www.di.uq.edu.au/research.

The role

A Postdoctoral Research Officer is sought to conduct research in microbial biology and (meta)genomics as part of an ARC Linkage grant examining design rules for nutritionally enhanced grains. The project involves a collaborative and multidisciplinary team of carbohydrate chemists, nutritional physiologists and microbiologists partnering with key grain production and processing companies. The person is expected to produce high level and innovative research directly relevant to the microbiome research goals of the project, leading to high impact scholarly papers, reports and new knowledge with commercial merit and potential. The person will work with senior scientists, research staff and students in the development and/or use of in vitro ferementation systems for the evaluation of how microbial consortia both digest and affect nutrient release and metabolite formation, principally from different grains and flours. The person will also foster and contribute to the research group's and Institute's productive collaborations with the larger UQ research community, as well as industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community, as required.

The person

Applicants should be a recent PhD graduate in Microbial Biology or a closely related area. They should demonstrate expert knowledge in microbial physiology, genetics, and genomics, and related bioinformatics platforms, with a particular focus on the gut microbiome in humans and/or food-borne microbes, as evidenced by high quality research publications. Knowledge and experience with the fields of food and nutrition research are highly desirable, along with a capacity to use culture-based and computational methods to define microbiome functional context. The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to establish effective professional relationships to represent and promote human microbiome research at a university and wider community level, as well as the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams across multiple sites.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion. Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For further information please contact our Australian Indigenous Employment Coordinator at: atsi_recruitment@uq.edu.au. Applications are also encouraged from women. This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 1 year at Research Academic level A with the possibility of extension. The remuneration package will be in the range $64,533.50 - $87,535.13p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $75,504.20 - $102,416.10p.a.).
