Job Purpose

he work will involve the full range of project management activities including, recruitment of participants, fieldwork data collection and analysis, report writing and overall day to day coordination. The post-holder will be based at the University of Birmingham and work with investigators Dr Alistair Hewison [Birmingham], George Kernohan [Ulster], Noleen McCorry [QUB] and Jo Coast [Bristol]. The post will require excellent communication skills and an ability to work with colleagues in a number of centres. This will involve developing the methodology/practical aspects of the study, liaising with appropriate Hospice staff and service users and all related activities.

Person Specification

Education and Professional Qualifications
• Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
• Primary degree in a relevant discipline
• Preferable to have, or be about to obtain, a postgraduate qualification in a relevant area.
• Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
• Ability to access and organise resources successfully

Previous Experience/Training
• Postgraduate research experience working with people with chronic illness and their family carers needed.
• Experience in multi-professional research collaboration preferred.
• Experience of working successfully on a research project (involving both qualitative and quantitative methods) preferred
• Clinical or other experience of chronic illness preferred.
• Ideally be able to evidence ability to complete a research project within a specified timescale.
• Achievement of proficiency in data collection, data entry and data analysis preferred.
• Experience in the use of qualitative analysis and statistical packages e.g. N-vivo, SPSS.

Interpersonal Skills
• Must be able to demonstrate evidence of ability to communicate complex information clearly.
• Must have effective interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to show evidence of ability to work on own initiative.
• Must have the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
• Must have the ability to work remotely.
• Ability to work with sensitive issues (which may arise in palliative care) preferred.

Research & Analogues Activities
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake research under supervision.
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to prepare research reports and presentations.
• Evidence of publications in a refereed journal preferred

Other Factors
• Access to a form of transport.
• Ability to travel for data collection purposes and to meetings.
• Availability to work outside normal working hours to meet the needs of the project.
