Applications are sought for a leadership opportunity in MRL Vaccine Bioprocess Research and Development. Individual will support Merck’s discovery & development efforts for Vaccine programs at West Point, PA. The incumbent possesses expert knowledge in cell culture/fermentation and broad knowledge of upstream process development. A key element of this assignment is to coordinate multiple program activities with Bioprocess R&D functions, Vaccine Basic Research and various functional groups within Merck.

The successful candidate will have a strong command of animal cell culture and fermentation with practical hands-on process development experience. Individual will have excellent scientific understanding of cell biology for vaccine production including cell metabolism, molecular biology and process scale-up.

The successful candidate will also provide technical and scientific leadership and subject matter expertise to all Merck vaccines programs, both in research and development, as well as in manufacturing and life cycle management. Individual is expected to provide technical leadership to various functional and strategic teams engaged in development of the vaccine candidate. The successful candidate will guide and mentor the upstream scientists and engineers, typically focusing on 1-2 programs at a time, while coordinating the overall program activities across much larger multi-functional and cross-divisional teams. The candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude. Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies. Proven ability to work in hands-on laboratory setting. Excellent organization, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Position requires employee to be willing to work with infectious agents and/or pathogens. Travel may be required to support technology transfer. This position will require occasional off hour and weekend work.

Qualifications

Education:

- Ph.D. in engineering or biological sciences.

Required:

- At least two (2) years of experience in biotechnology-related position (vaccines and/or therapeutic proteins)

- Must have strong scientific understanding of fermentation and cell culture processes and experience with aseptic production of vaccines or therapeutic proteins.

Preferred:

- Previous experience in processing of live virus, vaccines, biologics, and cell culture/fermentation equipment.

- Strong understanding of upstream process characterization or expression system development for vaccines and/or biologics is strongly preferred.

- Experience working with viral systems within a BSL-2 environment.

- Strong understanding and experience in cGMP manufacturing.
