Job Purpose

  • To support the Senior Professional Services Accountant on a wide range of issues as required.
  • Provide the primary communications point offering expert professional and technical advice and resolutions on financial matters to all levels of Budget Centre staff within the Professional Services. This includes the Registrar and Secretary, Senior Officers, Budget Holders and Administration Staff. Given the wide range of activities involved and the variety in services provided by the Budget Centre, the problems encountered can be either complex or relatively predictable.
  • Provide knowledge, leadership and advice on best practice relating to aspects of accountancy, strategy and management information.
  • As part of the Professional Services Accounting Team, the post holder will ensure that a consistent approach is taken to financial policy and financial advice for all accounting matters within the University. This involves an understanding and the interpretation of Professional Services and the University Strategy.
  • Responsibility for the production of budgets and accounts for Professional Service Budget Centres and for specific projects and activity. These should be both timely and accurate for inclusion within the Annual Accounts, Management Reports, Business Plans, External Funding bids and returns and 5 Year Strategic Plans.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and technical assistance to team members on an on-going basis and play a key role in ensuring that team objectives and deliverables are met as appropriate.
  • Responsible for communicating with Human Resources and Budget Centre staff to ensure that any proposed staffing changes are affordable within the constraints of the budgets available.
  • To act as the lead on development of reports, working papers and management information for use within and outside the section. This includes being the key contact with respect to any changes to the Management Information Unit Structure for Professional Services
  • To take the lead on specific projects within Professional Services. This will involve the interpretation of complex funding rules, grant requirements, usage criteria and costings of large and complicated activities. There will also be a requirement to liaise with other colleague within both Finance and the wider University with regard to the appropriate use of funds and the activity. This includes OFFA and ERDF funded projects
  • Provide high-level professional and technical support to the Senior Professional Services Accountant.
  • Management of the Accountancy Assistant, performing tasks such as monitoring and reconciling the external grants, costings, maintenance of systems and records and dealing with complex queries. The post holder and the Accountancy Assistant will also be responsible for setting up systems and procedures to ensure a professional and efficient service is provided to all customers.


Person Specification

Knowledge:

  • Newly qualified CCAB, or other equivalent relevant Finance/ Accountancy/Business qualification.


Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience within an accountancy or financial environment is essential with a customer focus. Experience gained over a minimum period of 3 to 5 years including the preparation and monitoring of budgets and the provision of financial information in a complex organisation.
  • Knowledge & understanding of ERDF regulations
  • Personal experience of complex financial computer systems and personal computers
  • Excellent general computer skills, particularly spreadsheets, with experience of Excel, Coda and Business Objects.
  • The ability to work independently and under own initiative.
  • Ability to organise varied workload and work to strict deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
