Job Details

CELFS is an ambitious Centre within the University of Bristol and works in line with the principles of development, reflexivity, autonomy, collaboration, transparency and transferability at all levels of its operation.

Established in its current form in 2011, our original remit was based around three core areas:

I) Pre-University programmes
ii) Intensive summer courses
iii) Provision for students studying at the University (both ‘international’ and ‘home’)

These still stand, but all areas have grown considerably, and the medium-term should see more of the same. Given this context, CELFS has chosen to add a second Deputy Director role to its management structure and specialise the two roles as either UG or PG to give the necessary oversight for curriculum progression from pre-sessional to in-sessional provision at both levels of study.

The Deputy Director role is probably the trickiest in the Centre, but it is also potentially the most interesting and stimulating. You basically need to be excellent at everything and you should be able to lead by example in all areas.

It’s a given that you’re qualified, experienced, and confident in teaching virtually all levels and all variants of EAP. You may need to step into the classroom with little notice for cover or do an observed lesson for CPD.

You should have strong principled views on EAP assessment, curriculum and materials development - and have a clear strategic vision in this area.

You will need to be able to juggle your workload at the same time as guiding the co-ordinators and tutors on how they can do the same. You’re going to have to be able to inspire and give direction to the ambitious, as well as being comfortable with not always being popular when there are difficult decisions. Naturally, this all comes with working with a Director who would like things done yesterday and a global top 40 university’s desire to be ranked even higher.

The role will expect you to have views on marketing, budgeting, recruitment, quality assurance at the same time as all aspects of the ‘student experience’. We’re ultimately looking for someone who is comfortable going from speaking to their Foundation personal tutee about UCAS choices one minute, to speaking on behalf of the Centre at external conferences on the future of Academic Literacy the next.

If this sounds like you, and you’re looking for a job that should be career defining, then we look forward to receiving your application.  Closing date is Thursday 25 May 2017.

For an informal discussion of the post, please contact Maxine.Gillway@bristol.ac.uk.
