Job Purpose
The ambition behind the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) project has been to provide a transformational learning experience for our undergraduate students. High specification laboratories furnished with state-of-the-art scientific equipment have provided a backdrop against which collaboration between disciplines has strengthened. Practical teaching has been re-designed to enable students to develop the practical and interdisciplinary skills demanded by employers. Phase I of the project was completed in September 2016 and has been operational since this date. Having completed two semesters of teaching, our efforts being reinforced by excellent staff and student feedback.
The Teaching Technician will support the Laboratory Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the Engineering Laboratory. The role holder will provide in-class support ensuring that all aspects of practical classes run well and that the student experience is high. They will support delivery of practical classes by ensuring that consumables and equipment are available for use and will ensure that staff and students work in a safe manner. They will assist the Laboratory Manager during discussions with Academic Colleges to aid in the improvement of laboratory classes providing advice and guidance on what can be achieved within the CTL. This will include contributing to the design, operation and optimisation of experiments and other practical tasks.
The role holder will need to feel comfortable operating in a fast-paced and busy laboratory environment. Flexibility (including around hours of work) and a willingness to learn new skills will be essential. There will be times when the role holder may be required to work in different teaching spaces across the Edgbaston campus
Person Specification
Qualifications:
• Applicants should have a degree (or similar) or equivalent experience in an appropriate discipline.
• A Science Council Professional Registration (desirable).
Previous Experience:
• Experience of technical work in the area of teaching support, preferably in the area of Engineering but applicants are welcome from any discipline.
• Experience of health and safety management in a busy multi-hazard environment.
• Practical experience of supporting laboratory equipment including fault-finding and completing repairs (where safe to do so).
• Experience of providing training in the safe use of equipment and suggesting ways to optimise results.
• Experience using Proactis and knowledge of the Universities Financial rules and procedures.
Other essential skills and qualities:
• The ability to assist with the development of practical class activities (both support and class improvement).
• The ability to support the management of laboratory facilities.
• An appreciation of health and safety hazards, risk and control.
• Ability to work under minimum supervision but function as part of a team.
• Ability work in a flexible manner.
• Effective communicator.
• Proficient in Word, Excel packages etc.
• A desire to develop own skills, knowledge and experience.
