Research Fellow in Catalytic Evaluation of Hybrid Catalysts

Functional Inorganic Materials & Supramolecular Chemistry

Location: Highfield Campus

Salary:  £32,004 to £33,943

Full Time, Fixed Term (24 months)

Closing Date:  Tuesday 23 May 2017

Interview Date:  To be confirmed

Reference: 863517EB

We are seeking postdoctoral research fellows who will contribute to the implementation of EU policies and directives on competitiveness and sustainability through the validation of novel concepts in hybrid materials design for heterogeneous catalysis.   This project will focus on evaluating the catalytic potential of hybrid materials with a view to establishing their proficiency in fine-chemical and pharmaceutical transformations. Expertise at the University of Southampton on the development of organometallic/organocatalytic methodologies will be combined with competency of consortium members to create innovative multifunctional hybrid catalysts.

This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic and ambitious experimental researcher with interests in developing asymmetric methodologies using supported catalysts. The successful candidate should have a first-hand experimental knowledge in organocatalysis and synergistic catalysis, with a keen interest in developing sustainable technology for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.  The research fellow will join a vibrant and well-established research group who are interested in the discovery and design of novel catalytic materials that address fundamental challenges in the chemical, environmental and energy landscape.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in chemistry or related discipline, and a track record of academic and research excellence. The ideal candidate should have prior experience and expertise in working with hybrid catalysts with particular focus on developing asymmetric methodologies in organocatalysis and synergistic catalysis. Potential candidates should also demonstrate an ability to write research papers independently, present their work at international conferences and be able to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams.  Additional experience in organic Chemistry with particular emphasis on carbon-heteroatom bond formation would be desirable.

This position is fully funded under the European Commission Horizon 2020 program for 24 months, with the possibility to extend for a further period of 16 months, subject to satisfactory progress. The project will be supervised by Professor Robert Raja (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/chemistry/about/staff/rr3.page) and Dr Ramon Rios (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/chemistry/about/staff/rrt1f11.page) and will involve collaborations with a consortium of academic and industrial partners in Europe.  Applicants must therefore have a strong interest and motivation for interdisciplinary research.  For additional information, please contact either Professor Robert Raja (R.Raja@soton.ac.uk) or Dr Ramon Rios (R.Rios-Torres@southampton.ac.uk).

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Application Procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The vacancy will close at midnight on the closing date as shown above. If you need any assistance, please contact Anastasia Shikhareva on +44 (0) 23 8059 9002. Please quote vacancy reference number 863517EB on all correspondence.
