Research Fellow in Control of Medical Robots

Job Details

Do you want to reduce cancer mortality rates in low-income countries by designing innovative robots for early screening? Do you want to make the difference in scientific research applied to surgical robotics? Are you able to think outside the box to find innovative solutions to life-threatening diseases? Do you want to join an international team of outstanding roboticists and clinicians?

We are looking for a talented, experienced and proactive researcher to join our Science and Technology of Robotics In Medicine (STORM) Lab, bringing their excitement for scientific research in medical robotics with them.

At the STORM Lab, we strive to improve the quality of life for people undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy and abdominal surgery by creating miniature intelligent robots. The continuous quest for miniaturization has made the science fiction vision of miniature capsule robots working inside the human body come true. Your work will contribute to the design and creation of mechatronic and self-contained devices to be used inside specific districts of the human body to detect and cure diseases in a non-invasive way.

This project is supported by the recent acquisition of a da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) and by a major EPSRC Global Challenge Research Fund grant to the STORM Lab aiming to optimise, assess, and validate a novel ultra-low-cost robot for gastrointestinal endoscopy to enable gastroesophageal cancer screening in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). It is anticipated that two visits to Tianjin in China will be required during the first two years of the project, one during the first year lasting a week, and one during the second year lasting a month.

Holding a PhD (or close to completion) in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Surgical Robotics or related disciplines, you will have a high level of analytical and computing skills (Python, C/C++, Java, Robot Operating System (ROS), and Mathworks MatLab are preferred), together with a proactive, enthusiastic approach to research.
