University of Southampton is seeking a highly motivated researcher of outstanding calibre to work on Fibre-laser pumped diamond Raman lasers for Lidar and clear plastics welding. This new three-year-long project is a collaboration with University of Strathclyde and industry, and is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The project requires fibre lasers with unique properties at 1 and 2 μm in the cw as well as pulsed regime, for pumping of the diamond Raman lasers. Your primary role will be to research, build, and validate these fibre lasers. You will also join in the further experiments on diamond lasers and applications.

You will work in ORC’s renowned high-power fibre laser group (www.orc.soton.ac.uk/hpfl.html), in top-class laboratories and with unsurpassed access to tailor-made fibres from ORC’s fabrication facilities. You will be integrated fully into the group, and conduct research both independently and in collaboration with other group members and the team. You will also spend some time at partners in Glasgow and Southampton, to integrate and validate the lasers in the partners’ test-beds. Beyond the immediate research project, you will have excellent opportunities to participate in many exciting activities in ORC’s open and rich research environment, assist in the supervision of PhD students, and work with world leaders in the exciting fields of fibre and diamond lasers.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience related to optics or lasers, a strong background in lasers/optics with excellent experimental skills and research experience. You will have a hands-on approach along with a keen interest in developing new physical ideas from proof-of-principle to novel and practical, application-optimised lasers in collaboration with academic and industrial project partners working in other fields.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
