Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university, with a turnover of $1.1bn, including research revenue of over $200m generated across eight diverse faculties and two research institutes. We employ more than 5400 academic and professional staff to support over 41,000 students, making us one of NZ’s largest employers.

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and engaged individual to join our small but active research team operating within the School of Medicine at the University of Auckland. Ours is a fast-paced environment that will offer you plenty of variety, with no two days on the job being the same.

Our projects and research interests are varied and include human factors, patient safety and simulation, with a focus on surgery and anaesthesia. We value high quality research outputs, active engagement with our affiliated university and hospital departments and with our international collaborators with the ultimate goal of contributing to improved patient care.

Who’re we looking for?

  • The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. clinical medicine, biomedical or biomedical sciences, bioengineering, psychology or behavioural sciences, medical education).
  • A sound understanding of good clinical research practices, the ability to contribute to academic writing and statistical analyses, and a self-directed work ethic are also essential.
  • There is scope for you to develop your own research interests and projects within this role, and an expectation to submit grant applications for ongoing funding.

The role

  • The main purpose of the position (around 70% of the role) is to support the Head of CMHSE in organising and managing research and other academic activities, and to contribute to these activities.
  • This work will be predominantly but not exclusively related to human factors, simulation, patient safety and in the perioperative context.
  • Specific projects will include the MORSim project (a national, Multidisciplinary Operating Room Simulation-based team training intervention), the optimal use of Checklists to improve patient safety, and assessment of competence in medical graduates.

There will be an expectation to engage in advancing research within CMHSE (around 30% of the role) through engaging with aspects of ongoing projects (notably grant applications) and becoming part of the wider research activities in the Centre.
