Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animal Resources in Merck Research Laboratories at the West Point, PA site is seeking an anatomic pathologist to join a highly collaborative team of scientists dedicated to the development of innovative and safe drugs and vaccines. Merck pathologists provide scientific leadership regarding the design and conduct of post mortem portions of studies, and provide expertise to integrate the interpretation of all post mortem data into the overall safety profile of drug candidates. Working with the pathologist is a highly effective technical staff skilled in incorporating non-routine procedures, immunohistochemical staining, and morphometry in studies when warranted. Additionally, Merck pathologists are integral members of the scientific teams working on drug candidates from discovery to late stage development employing cutting edge, innovative research methodologies such as transmission electron microscopy, immunohistochemical staining, image analysis, and in vivo imaging tools (e.g. magnetic resonance imaging) to investigate mechanisms of toxicity and develop novel biomarkers and predictive models to derisk new chemical entities for safety-related liabilities.
Pathologists work independently to analyze data and review literature to help teams solve scientific problems. Career development in the form of developing or expanding expertise in area(s) or organ system(s) of interest, becoming recognized subject matter experts, is highly encouraged. Merck pathologists have the opportunity to be the lead preclinical Safety
Assessment representatives on drug development teams, overseeing the design and execution of studies, and generation of regulatory strategy and communications with global regulatory agencies to support the development of drug candidates.
The successful candidate must have a DVM or equivalent and residency training in anatomic and/or toxicologic pathology with ACVP board certification or equivalent. An advanced research degree (such as a PhD) is preferred

- D.V.M., DACVP or equivalents
- An advanced research degree (such as a PhD) is preferred
Required:
- DVM or equivalent and residency training in anatomic and/or toxicologic pathology with ACVP board certification or equivalent. An advanced research degree (such as a PhD) is preferred
Preferred:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
- Enthusiasm for continuing to develop as a toxicologic pathologist,
- Creative research abilities including excellent skills conducting literature searches, problem solving, navigating databases and strong understanding of advanced research techniques,
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with other Merck pathologists and scientists across the organization.
