Salary:  £29,301 to £32,958 per annum

The Software Sustainability Institute is looking to recruit a Research Software Engineer (RSE).

The Software Sustainability Institute is the world-leading authority on research software. It plays a key role in helping the research community recognise the role of software, and in adopting practices that lead to reliable and reproducible research.

The new recruit will be based with our software team in Southampton, and will work with research groups from across the UK to help improve their software and practices. This will require a solid background in development practices and excellent communication skills. A talent for technical problem solving is a must. The recruit will come into contact with a wide range of technologies and will be given many opportunities to build new skills. We don't expect you to be proficient in everything, but you must enjoy learning new technologies.

The recruit will make a valuable contribution to the Institute's work, from software development, to training and even in helping us fight for recognition of Research Software Engineers within academia. There will be many opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career as a Research Software Engineer: the recruit will learn from leading RSEs, and will be given the opportunity to build on skills outside of software development, such as in project management and consultancy.

The position is a fixed-term contract: currently ending in November 2018, but expected to continue for much longer. The successful candidate will be based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering. The salary range is £29,301 to £32,958, dependent on experience.

A PhD or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience in scientific research is required. This level of knowledge and experience may have been achieved via a postgraduate degree or professional qualification in a relevant subject area, supplemented by demonstrable experience in scientific research.
