Job Details

Are you interested in using your skills to find the causes of joint disease in patients with Cystic Fibrosis? Are you an experienced PhD Molecular Biologist with cell culture and cell biology methods? Do you want to work in academia and develop experience in writing to the standard required for research reports/publications?

Capitalising on the infrastructure and samples collected from concurrent studies at Leeds (Cystic Fibrosis Unit, directed by Dr Daniel Peckham) and Manchester (Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre and North West Lung Centre), this study will examine the status of inflammasome activation (NLRP3 and NLRC4 initially) in cells (blood and tissue) from patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and the roles of TLR-mediated IRE1/XBP1 and UPR in these patients at both active and quiescent stages of disease.

You will co-ordinate projects investigating dysregulation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) as a disease mechanism in patients with CF and CF arthropathy (CFA). The UPR and TLR-mediated XBP1 and inflammasome(s) activation will be examined in different cohorts of patients with CF and CFA, with a view to discovering whether some of complications in CF, including CFA, are primarily due to these mechanisms. Preliminary data from this study will be used in the design of a therapeutic trial of anti-IL-1 (anakinra/canakinumab) in CF and CFA.

You will support the management of the research group, specifically dedicated to this project, consisting of a research technician (laboratory manager), and two PhD students (in 1st and 2nd years), as required.
