Role Specification

The Director, UQBR will lead the operation and development of best practices and strategies that demonstrates that animal welfare is paramount and the supply and use of animals to internal and external clients is undertaken in adherence to the three Rs tenet (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement).  Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure), the incumbent will exercise significant judgement and influence across the University, and with key research partners and affiliates, in the harmonisation/optimisation and management of the University’s current and future infrastructure needs with respect to laboratory animals; and the associated planning and acquisition. The role carries significant responsibility for actively engaging with the biomedical industry and other research partners to develop strategies relating to the use and housing of animals employed in teaching and research; ensuring the needs of the research community are met in line with the highest standards in animal ethics and welfare.

The person

The successful applicant will have extensive knowledge and understanding of the operations of research infrastructure, especially in laboratory animal management for scientific purposes. In addition, they will possess considerable knowledge of and experience in working within, the remit of National and State legislation and guidelines in regard to animal care and use; project management experience with the demonstrated ability to plan, oversee and manage large Laboratory Animal Facilities/Aquaria; a track record of effective leadership of professional and academic staff; effective interpersonal and relationship management skills; budget and financial management experience; and a demonstrated capacity to build a successful operation.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
Remuneration

This position is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 5 years (with the possibility of renewal).  An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the preferred candidate.
