Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in Quantum Communications

Job Details

Job Role

Applications are invited for research engineer / physicist positions available at the Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory at the University of Bristol. The role will conduct R&D in quantum communication and cryptography systems as part of the £24M EPSRC-funded Quantum Technologies Hub in Quantum Communications.

CQP is a world leading quantum information research centre pursuing fundamental quantum information science and developing unique and novel quantum technologies pioneering the use of cutting-edge integrated quantum photonics. CQP is a key partner in the Quantum Communications Hub, part of a £270M investment by the UK government into quantum technologies. In particular, it is focussed on bringing quantum technologies out of the lab and into the real world.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will specialise in quantum communication and cryptography systems, working on engineering one or more of: bulk optical system design and integration; free space optics pointing and tracking control; design, characterisation, and operation of integrated quantum photonic circuits (InP, SiON, Si, etc); quantum communication and cryptography systems and networks; design and testing of high-speed electronic hardware for single photon detectors and integrated photonic circuits; development real-time software for communications, data-processing, and network systems control. Your development of quantum technology will also include working with industry: experience with engineering optical/electronic systems is essential; experience in technology development would also be ideal. You will be working with highly motivated PhD students and experience in mentoring students is therefore also desirable.

The successful applicant will work closely with Professor John Rarity FRS, Professor Mark Thompson, Dr Chris Erven and Dr Anthony Laing and their teams, as well as engaging with all other members of CQP who have experience ranging from photonics device fabrication through to quantum information science theory.

This post is available up to 30 November 2019 in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. CQP is committed to helping researchers become independent academics and have extensive experience in aiding PDRAs with fellowship applications.

Informal enquiries can be made to: Dr Belinda Sharpe, Project Manager; belinda.sharpe@bristol.ac.uk

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
