Job Purpose

This position will be based in the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research (IMSR), College of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS) to support a broad portfolio of clinically based and basic scientific research across the areas of early pregnancy reproductive health.

Research activity will focus upon on one of all potential areas of early pregnancy and reproductive health, and preferably upon thyroid disorder. The post provides an opportunity for specialist training in this field alongside pursuit of an academic research career with contributions to teaching in established teaching programmes (MBChB, BMedSc, MRes). The clinical duties of the post will be located at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

For the 50% academic research and teaching component of the role, it is anticipated that the successful applicant will undertake a programme of research in line with the strategic priorities of IMSR and MDS. IMSR is the academic home of a 35 principal investigators including a significant number of world leading specialists, and has a strong track record for supporting career development and career establishment fellowships by major funders, including clinician scientist roles and senior clinical research fellowships from MRC and Wellcome Trust.

For the 50% clinical training component of the role, the postholder will have responsibilities for care of inpatients and outpatients experiencing a range of reproductive health issues, and teaching and assessment of medical students and postgraduate students.

 

Person Specification

  • MRCOG (part 2) or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to attain funding from peer reviewed external grant bodies
  • Good quality publications
  • Experience of teaching medical undergraduates
  • Small group teaching
  • Computer literate with Word, Excel, EndNote
  • Ability to work in a team-orientated environment and to work without friction with colleagues
  • Non temperamental disposition
  • Motivated to take forward the specialty
  • Committed to a career in academic medicine
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team
  • Bright, committed and able to produce consistently high quality work within deadlines
