Job Purpose

The Research and Knowledge Transfer Facilitator (R&KTF) will be an integral part of the research support teams dedicated for the College of Social Science and the College of Arts and Law that is provided by the two respective College Research Support Offices (CRSOs), the central EU funding team as well as the wider infrastructure for research support across the University. The research support infrastructure provides academics with a ‘one-stop-shop’ facility to support those involved in research and knowledge transfer (KT) activities from the initial idea through to winning external funds. The ability to effectively co-ordinate multiple stakeholder requirements (within and beyond the institution) to secure new income is a critical component of the office’s approach to customer service. All post-holders within the research support team are expected to demonstrate a high standard of care, initiative and motivation in supporting their academic community.

The R&KTF will be responsible for driving and supporting bidding activity primarily to European research-related funding schemes across the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (his or her “portfolio”), offering a strategic level of input to individual, department and school tasks. However support for applications to other funding bodies will be considered depending on the experience of the applicant. The post-holder will be involved in all application support to funding schemes and, in particular: (i) lead the matching of academic idea to specific funding opportunities and bid development (including strategic project guidance and drafting text); and (ii) have oversight of collation of costs; partnership coordination; management of internal approval processes spanning finance checks through to academic peer review; and technicalities of the submission process. To enable high standards of delivery in all their work, the post-holder will have access to administrative assistance to support their activities.

The post-holder will be expected to use a proactive and pragmatic approach, have a commitment to furthering the research aspirations of academic colleagues with attendant understanding of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences and enthusiasm.

Person Specification

Knowledge and skills
• Excellent knowledge and experience of supporting applications for EU research funding, with a proven track record in contributing to winning bids.
• Commitment to the delivery of exceptional customer service.
• Strong and persuasive communication skills (written and oral) including the ability to handle negotiations with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
• Financial management skills, including the ability to develop complex budgets using Excel.
• Good analytical skills (financial, situational and organisational) including the ability to effectively identify and assess risks.
• Strong IT skills, including advanced use of Word and Excel
• Ability to work well in a team.

Qualifications and experience
• Degree-educated: preferably in the social sciences, arts or humanities.
• Strong experience of a research / business development/ fundraising role, including proven track record of effective bid development for external funders.
• Experience of coordinating and facilitating a team in the delivery of particular projects.

Desirable skills
• Experience in and knowledge of one or more of the research areas of the College.
• The ability to work flexibly to meet external funding deadlines.
