Job Purpose

The purpose of the job is to develop composite phase change and thermochemical materials based thermal energy storage devices. The work will involve the following –
• Design of the thermal energy storage devices based on theoretical analyses and mathematical modelling of flow and heat and mass transfer;
• Fabrication of the storage devices (including storage materials) based on the design and study the charge-discharge kinetics of the devices under different application relevant conditions;
• Investigation into the effects of storage capacity, power rating, heat/cold energy source, type and properties of storage materials, charge and discharge time and duration, internal structure, the use of forced convection, insulation, etc, on the design and performance of the storage devices;
• Development of a method for the design and optimisation of the storage devices;
• Investigation of the use of small scale storage devices as a mean for grid peak-shaving;
• Interactions with both academic and industrial collaborators in the project teams, and building internal & external contacts and networks;
• Helping with training PhD students and other group members who are working on similar areas;
• Writing journal and conference publications;
• Organising review meetings and seminars;
• Supervising student’s projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
• Assisting supervisors to train researchers and students new to the laboratories and to ensure the laboratories to meet health and safety requirements

Person Specification

• First or a 2:1 degree in relevant science/engineering discipline and PhD or equivalent experience and qualifications in an area related to the main research responsibilities;
• Solid background in heat and mass transfer, and fluid flow;
• High level capability in heat exchanger design and manufacture;
• Strong capability in modelling complex multiphase heat and mass transfer and fluid flow;
• Experience in experimental devices design, data-logging and construction;
• Demonstrable prior experience and track record in areas closely related to the main research responsibilities;
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
