Bristol Children’s Vaccine Centre (BCVC) wish to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow to assist the research team in the successful delivery of a community-based step wedge randomised controlled trial to investigate transmission of pneumococcus (and other bacteria) from toddlers to their family contacts. The study will be conducted at five sites (Bristol being the lead site), with recruitment occurring over two seasons. The study is fully funded including the salary of the clinical fellow. The ethics application is being finalised with the expectation of the study starting in summer 2017.

You will oversee recruitment of families at the Bristol site working with the paediatric clinical research team and will liaise with other recruiting sites to facilitate study conduct overall. Taking responsibility for organisation and day-to-day running of the study including working with research nurses on conduct of study visits (in the family home), consent, vaccination, collection of samples and data etc. You will also work within the laboratory team involved in the analysis of samples and generation of results.

You will work with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of paediatricians, research nurses, administrative & managerial staff, and members of the laboratory team. You will learn a full portfolio of academic skills including all aspects of setting up and conducting a large multicentre study in human subjects, laboratory analysis of samples, data analysis and interpretation and presentation and publication of results. The work undertaken would be suitable for preparation of a thesis for a higher degree (PhD) although this is not a requirement. The post is ideally suited to a paediatrician with a career interest in infectious diseases.
