Job Details
Candidates are invited to apply for a fully-funded PhD position in Molecular Medicine in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr Maria Fragiadaki and Professor Jon Sayers, working alongside a skilled team of scientists in a dynamic Academic environment.
Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is the most common kidney genetic disorder, affecting nearly 9 million people worldwide. ADPKD like cancer, is characterised by uncontrolled proliferation of epithelial cells, altered polarity, abnormal cell death, inflammation and the development of tissues fibrosis or scarring. We have recently provided strong evidence that the evolutionarily conserved cytokine-sensing pathway known as JAK-STAT and more specifically, STAT5, is a driver of ADPKD proliferation and progression (http://www.kidney-international.org/article/S0085-2538(16)30655-X/abstract), Fragiadaki M et al, Kidney International, 2017, Vol 91, Issue 3, Pages 575-586.
The aim of the PhD is to study the role of the JAK-STAT signalling pathway in ADPKD pathogenesis. The successful candidate will be trained in the use of murine in vivo and cell-based in vitro systems, molecular biology, protein based therapeutics and drug design with the ultimate aim of developing a new therapeutic intervention.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should hold or be about to achieve a First or Upper-Second (2.1) class honors degree in any relevant subject (such as molecular biology, biochemistry, human genetics etc).
Funding Notes
Fully-funded, 100% UK/EU tuition fees paid and annual living expenses of £14,553 (full-award, RCUK rate). Successful international candidates will be required to make up the difference between UK/EU and international fees.
