Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Director (and current Assistant Director) in the academic and operational management of the Centre for Human Rights, which is a department in the Faculty of Law;

  • Organising and managing academic and research-related programmes;

  • Overseeing reporting under various contracts;

  • Supporting fund-raising for the Centre’s externally funded projects and programmes;

  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;

  • Representing the Centre in international fora;

  • Teaching on the Centre’s post-graduate and training programmes;

  • Undertaking and publishing research outputs in line with Faculty policy; and

  • Supervising master’s and doctoral candidates.

Required Competencies

  • A doctoral degree qualification in international human rights law (although a professional or other qualification, supported by research publications, could be considered in appropriate cases);

  • Recognised champion of human rights;

  • A proven record of research and publications in international human rights law and related subject fields;

  • A proven record of teaching and training in the subject field;

  • Proven experience and competence in successfully raising funds and management of these funds;

  • Experience in liaison with internal and external stakeholders, particularly within Africa;

  • Established national, African and international profile and networks;

  • Strong leadership and communication skills;

  • Proven competence and experience in project management; and

  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students (requirement for appointment as Professor).

Added advantages and preferences

  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students (recommendation for appointment as Associate Professor).

  • Academic specialisation on African issues;

  • Experience of working with AU human rights bodies;

  • Experience in project monitoring and evaluation;

  • Experience in litigation before national or international tribunals;

  • Experience in editing or production of publications; and

  • Competence in any of the other AU languages (French, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese).

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
