Job Role

The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Senior Research Associate within the Musculoskeletal Research Unit in the School of Clinical Sciences.

The post-holder will complete data collection, analysis and write up of an ethnographic research study. The study comprises work in four hospital settings across the south of England. The work in this role involves completing fieldwork in the hospitals, will focus on hospital services for patients after joint replacement surgery. The work is within a project funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which is led as a whole from the University of Oxford with qualitative work led from the University of Bristol.

The post will involve the researcher spending one-week phases of fieldwork at each of four hospitals (total of four to six weeks). This necessitates week-long stays at the study sites. The researcher will observe practice and conduct interviews with patients and staff. The researcher will be responsible for data processing, analysis and closing the research at the study sites. The study aims to describe care pathways and the roles of staff, to understand implementation of change and practice, and to describe patients’ experiences of care.
Importantly, the post-holder will be responsible for producing reports and publications about the research and the research findings. Given the tight timeframe an essential criterion for this role is that the post-holder needs to have experience in producing accurate and appropriate reports for national research funders, with experience of producing reports for the NIHR a particular benefit.

Person Specification
The position is based in the Musculoskeletal Research Unit, at the School of Clinical Sciences at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Desk space is within a light and airy open-plan area. The position is suitable for someone with a PhD or who is close to PhD completion, or who has equivalent experience working in ethnographic qualitative research related to health. Sound methodological knowledge, experience and ability to deliver research on time is crucial to this role. In return we offer a supportive and exciting research environment at Bristol with career development training available through the University’s programme of courses. The post-holder would be encouraged and supported to avail of training and development opportunities and to work in collaboration with colleagues at Bristol and in Oxford.

We ask that prospective applicants pay close attention to the timeframe of this post, including the experience in ethnography and implementation science as well as experience in writing reports. We suggest that applicants consider the essential criteria when writing their applications.
The post is full-time. It is essential that the post-holder is available to start in or by July 2017. The position is until 20th April 2018. Line-management will be provided by Professor Rachael Gooberman-Hill.
