The Petrology Research Group uses a combination of high-pressure and high-temperature experiments, petrology, geochemistry, and mineral physics to attack a wide range of problems in the solid earth from the core to the surface. The Volcanology Research Group aims to understand the physical processes underlying volcanic phenomena and to develop methods of hazard and risk assessment that can be applied to volcanoes worldwide.

The Geological Services Technician will provide technical support for the research activities in the Volcanology & Petrology Laboratories, working with the academic staff & students to ensure these spaces are used correctly and safely. They will be responsible for running the central Polishing, Rock Crushing, Milling & Mineral Separation facilities used by many Groups across the School. They will operationally manage the Fluid Dynamic Labs which are part of the Volcanology Laboratories, support the Lab Manager of the Experimental Petrology labs in running the high-pressure apparatus and analytical instrumentation housed in these spaces, and assist the academic lead of the Rheology laboratory in the maintenance and upkeep of this space. This role will include supporting fieldwork related to both groups, and maintaining field equipment.

You will be educated to A-Level in a science subject, preferably in Geology, or have vocational qualifications (NVQ or BTEC Level 3) in a relevant area, or the equivalent relevant experience. We are looking for candidates with a background in laboratory skills and working in a laboratory environment, who have a knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety requirements for the laboratory & field environment. You should also have good organisational, communication and time-management skills, with the capability to problem solve. You will be able to work in a team but also have experience of working/responding independently and dealing with unforeseen problems and circumstances.
