Research Fellow in Applied Driver Behaviour Modelling

Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a strong foundation in both quantitative modelling and in human psychology and behaviour? Do you want to contribute to building the automated transportation system of tomorrow, whilst growing your skill set and career within a world-leading, cross-disciplinary group of researchers at the UK University of the Year 2017?

Working across the Institute for Transport Studies and the School of Psychology you will join a unique, cross-disciplinary team doing research in fields such as human perception and action, human factors of automated vehicles, and virtual testing of driving and traffic safety. You will contribute to research projects on these topics, in collaboration with several UK and International vehicle manufacturers.

Leveraging state of the art knowledge in psychology and neuroscience, and building on existing expertise in the team, you will be developing quantitative models of road user behaviour. The behaviours to be modelled include human vehicle control both before and after driving in automated mode, as well as traffic interactions between human road users and automated vehicles. You will then be applying these models in computer simulations to support industrial virtual testing activities. Working alongside academic and research colleagues and industry stakeholders, you will be responsible for a diverse range of research activities, including also data collection and preparation of papers for scientific journals and conferences.

With a PhD (or close to completion) in Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience or a closely allied discipline, you will have a strong foundation in mathematics and scientific programming and experience of developing and testing mathematical models of complex systems. A strong grasp of current pscyhological and neuroscientific models of human behaviour is preferable and a background in traffic or driving research is desirable.
