Experimental Officer in Mass Spectrometry

Job Purpose

To provide technical leadership for the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Facility in the School of Biosciences and to provide an advanced mass spectrometry service in support of researchers in the life sciences. This job involves oversight of the day-to-day operation and administration of the Facility, including equipment/reagent purchasing and maintenance, supervising laboratory personnel, experimental design and delivery, liaising with users, contribution to research publications and grant applications, training students and postdocs in mass spectrometry and associated techniques.

Person Specification

• PhD and relevant further experience in biological mass spectrometry.
• Significant hands-on experience in quantitative proteomics and LC-MS/MS (ESSENTIAL). Experience of Fourier transform mass spectrometry (DESIRED).
• Experience with collaborating with researchers, experimental design, supervising laboratory personnel, contributing to research publications, training students and post docs in mass spectrometry.
• Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, including a track record of managing an analytical service facility.
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Ability to work with own initiative, manage time effectively, work to deadlines, assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
• Detailed knowledge of laboratory safety including prior experience of writing COSHH and risk assessments.
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
