Research Fellow for Integrated Modelling

Job Details

This post is being advertised as part of ‘An assessment of the ecosystem service and livelihood implications of government development proposals in coastal Bangladesh’ project funded by the ESPA (ecosystem services for poverty alleviation) Regional Opportunities Fund. It is an international, multi-disciplinary and multi-partner project examining the impact of plausible investment plans of coastal Bangladesh. The project is multidisciplinary and requires a working knowledge of engineering, natural and social sciences, as well as governance and policies. This research will involve cooperation with Bangladeshi project partners (BUET) and is being conducted in a participatory manner with relevant stakeholders (ESPA, GED, DfID) who will help to pose the critical policy questions, define future scenarios and contribute to the analysis and interpretation of the results.

You will be responsible (supported by discipline experts and other research fellows), for helping to develop the detailed scenarios and apply these with ΔDIEM, the Delta Dynamic Integrated Emulator Model developed under the ESPA Deltas project. This will include collating and handling secondary data and other model outputs concerning the natural and social dimensions of the delta and how they have changed in the 20th/early 21st century and hence might change in the future.

It is essential you have quantitative skills and apply ΔDIEM and possibly other models (as required) to support the project team in this process. You will help organise and hold stakeholder engagement workshops and be an ambassador for the project, including regularly disseminating findings by taking the lead in preparing publication materials for refereed journals, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project web site and the sponsors (ESPA) such as policy briefs.

The applicant should have PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications in coastal science or engineering and experience in applying complex models including testing/validating the model results and managing databases. Model development and stakeholder engagement experiences are also required. Experience of cross-disciplinary research in natural and/or social sciences is essential. A willingness to travel is also essential.

The post will be responsible to the Project Leader, Professor Robert Nicholls, and will work under the supervision of Dr Attila Lazar (co-I). The successful applicant will be based at the Highfield Campus of the University of Southampton.  If you would like further information please contact Robert Nicholls (r.j.nicholls@soton.ac.uk).
