Job Details

Details

The Department of Music at the University of Sheffield is delighted to announce three new doctoral scholarships, generously funded by The Frederick Loewe Foundation and supervised by Dr Dominic McHugh. The scholarships will contribute to the creation of a new Frederick Loewe Edition, in which the composer's complete works will eventually be published in scholarly critical editions, with Dr McHugh serving as the General Editor. The successful applicants will each edit a complete musical by Loewe that will be published in the Edition, supported by a thesis. Joining Matthew Malone, the existing holder of a Loewe doctoral scholarship at Sheffield who is currently editing Paint Your Wagon for publication in the Edition, the successful applicants will also form a research team with Dr McHugh that will investigate Loewe's works through performances, conferences, exhibitions, film screenings and other events as appropriate.
Studentship Description

The holders of these studentships will each choose a musical from Brigadoon, Camelot or Gigi (stage version). They will prepare a critical edition of their chosen work, including full scholarly apparatus, and this will form a portion of their PhD submission. They will also prepare a thesis on some aspect of the work or a related theme, which might include aspects of composition, source studies, performance or reception. Within these boundaries, the student will have considerable scope for choice, allowing for three discrete, individual and original projects to emerge. The studentships would suit students from a range of disciplines, including musicology, musical direction, performance and orchestration. Dr McHugh will be the principal supervisor of these PhDs, but the students will also benefit from the input of one of the other musicologists at Sheffield as secondary supervisor.

These studentships carry related responsibilities within the project as a whole. The holders will be responsible for making their edition print-ready by the end of their period of study, and will be required within reason to support and contribute to the team's other activities (e.g. by helping to organise conferences and performances). As far as possible, these will be tailored to the students' individual strengths and interests.
