Description

Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and inventiveness; this is the space where Merck has codified its 125-year legacy. Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare.

Merck Manufacturing Division, MMD, is a team of dedicated, energetic individuals who are committed to being the most trusted supplier of pharmaceuticals and health products worldwide. Our facilities, along with our external contractors, suppliers, and partners, comprise an interdependent global manufacturing network that’s committed to delivering a compliant, reliable supply to customers and patients on time, every time, across the globe.

The Center for Packaging & Device Analytics (CPDA) is being formed within the Merck Manufacturing Division to take responsibility for physical analytical roles that are critical for packaging production support and commercialization of new product packaging and combo-product devices. The CPDA will initially be a team of four experienced scientists/engineers (located at our West Point, PA facility), who will administer our internal Merck packaging technology laboratories, perform non-compendial physical measurements to qualify new components, design and execute testing to verify device design/functionality, and, conduct forensic investigation of packaging defects and complaints for manufacturing investigations. The group will also have important consulting responsibilities, including participating on risk assessments for new component technology, packaging control strategy, packaging line qualification & quality risk management, authoring new filing sections (packaging specs and methods), improving incoming/in-process/on-line physical testing at packaging sites, and, serving as the company experts on primary packaging barrier modeling (e.g. moisture/O2) and measurement techniques.

The CPDA is considered a Center of Excellence, residing within the central analytical group of the Merck Manufacturing Division and supporting the entire global human-health product portfolio. The CPDA will closely collaborate with various Packaging Technology engineering groups, global packaging sites, a supplier management group, and two analytical groups, one focused on extractables & leachables and the other focused on general physical measurements for products

The CPDA leader will execute select projects while managing a group (initially three experienced Scientist/Engineers and one contractor), for which the CPDA leader will define, prioritize and assign projects. Two staff will be PhD-level—with one specializing in oral solid-dosage form packaging/devices and the other specializing in the biosterile modality. The remaining staff will be focused on lab administration and in-house experimental execution. The CPDA leader role includes being or becoming the lead expert in design requirement specification, verification and filing for Combination Devices. The CPDA leader must have demonstrated excellence in relevant applied research as well as be a critical analytical thinker and creative problem solver, who can apply deep understanding of packaging materials & function, physical science & testing, and fit-for-purpose & robust analytical development to meet the needs of factory, engineering investigations and development. Finally, the CPDA leader must be a highly effective collaborator and capable of driving strategic improvement in the CPDA and business processes within Packaging operations & development.
