Chief Operating Officer

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest, most prestigious and diverse research-intensive universities. With an annual turnover of £635 million, more than 33,000 students and 7,800 staff, the University is making significant investments in student education, research and innovation, and extending its international reach. The campus is also being transformed to meet the needs and aspirations of students and staff.

The University wishes to appoint a Chief Operating Officer who will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for overseeing the effective operation of the University, ensuring that all of its activities are carefully aligned with the strategic plan and with each other. The Chief Operating Officer will work in close partnership with other members of the University Executive Group to ensure the timely and effective delivery of: outstanding student education and outcomes; high-quality research with global impact; academic and financial sustainability; and productive engagement with a wide range of local, national and international partners.

Candidates for the post will have an outstanding track record of achievement in strategic and operational management in a university or similarly complex organisation in either the public or private sector. Positive and purposeful, the successful candidate will have: a capacity for innovative thinking; a strong aptitude for partnership working; expertise in the successful development and implementation of leading edge business processes and systems; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and an empathy with the place of universities in modern society.
