The UQ Energy Initiative

The UQ Energy Initiative was established in 2011 to integrate UQ’s strengths and diversity in energy research. With many government and industry partners, UQ is uniquely placed to understand and address the challenges ahead. UQ’s breadth of experience ranges from engineering, material sciences and mining research, to social policy, economics, and environment. This aligns with the specific challenges facing Australia with its abundant and cost competitive coal and gas resources and an economy that is heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Accordingly, our energy research focuses on transforming traditional energy technologies and systems, while supporting renewable energy technologies and the development of new concepts and emerging solutions. Complementing this technology research, we are developing significant programs mapping social change and the economic and environmental impact of the new energy era.  

A key focus of the UQ Energy Initiative is to facilitate engagement between the university’s best researchers and leaders in industry and government. The priorities of industry and policy makers need to inform UQ energy research programs to make them relevant and as effective as possible.

The role

The successful applicant will work in a multidisciplinary research team of geologists, engineers, geophysicists, hydrogeologists and modellers to assess whether or not industrial scale storage is viable. You will be working with senior academics, postdoctoral fellows and students to deliver high impact science outcomes. This position will provide economics support to the project. You will be evaluating conventional project cash discounted cash flow analysis, deployment sequence optimization and real option value analysis for notional CCS projects. 

The person

Applicants should be a newly qualified or early career post-doctoral researcher and have obtained (or are expected to obtain within 2-3 months) a PhD in resource economics with emphasis on project economics and real option evaluation.

You should also have detailed knowledge and understanding of technical aspects of resource project economic evaluation; approaches to CCS economics evaluation; experience collating, analysing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative research data; strong inter-personal communications and well-delevoped written communications skills.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, 2 year fixed term appointment at Research Academic Level A or B depending on qualifications and experience. The remuneration package for appointment at Research Academic Level A will be in the range $64,533 - $87,535 p.a., plus employer superannuation contribution of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $75,503 - $102,415 p.a.) and the remuneration package for appointment at Research Academic Level B will be in the range $92,142 - $109,419 p.a., plus employer superannuation contribution of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $107,806 - $128,020 p.a.)
