Job Details

University of Southampton is seeking a highly motivated researcher of outstanding calibre to work on the growth of semiconductor heterostructures and investigate strong-coupling phenomena in hybrid organic/inorganic microcavities. This project, which is supported by our programme grant on Hybrid Polaritonics, is a collaboration with the University of Würzburg and industry. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The project requires expertise in the growth of III-V semiconductor heterostructures by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and preferably in the characterisation of semiconductor devices by means of optical spectroscopy. Practical experience in MBE-growth of phosphides would be beneficial.

This post involves extended research visits at the University of Würzburg at the Chair of Technical Physics (Technische Physik) and the Gottfried-Landwehr-Laboratory for Nanotechnology, the world renowned centre for the fabrication and characterization of semiconductor microcavities and nanostructures. You will be fully integrated into the Hybrid Photonics group at the University of Southampton where you will conduct advanced optical spectroscopies on the semiconductor microcavities you will fabricate during your placements at the University of Würzburg. You will conduct research both independently and in collaboration with other group members and partner research team. Beyond the immediate research project, you will have excellent opportunities to participate in many exciting activities both at the University of Southampton open and rich research environment, assist in the supervision of PhD students, and work with world leaders in the exciting field of semiconductor fabrication of low dimensional structures towards an electrically pumped hybrid polariton laser.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience related to semiconductor fabrication, and characterisation with excellent experimental skills and research experience. You will have a hands-on approach along with a keen interest in developing new physical ideas from proof-of-principle to novel and practical, application-optimised semiconductor devices in collaboration with academic and industrial project partners working in the field.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

For informal enquires please contact the principal investigator, Professor Pavlos Lagoudakis via email at lagous@southampton.ac.uk

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
