Job Purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking specified research activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

This project is looking at validating the mechanism of action of candidate drugs for the treatment of bladder cancer. Current survival rates are ~50% and new therapies are needed. Using a series of epigenetic drugs, we have identified two candidate drugs which demonstrate potential as adjunctive therapies for bladder cancer. This project will be further test and validate these candidate drugs by studying possible modes of action and biomarkers that may be used in the clinic.

The job will involve working with bladder cancer cell lines predominantly and a range of cellular, molecular and biochemical assays including flow cytometry. Some studies will involve spending some time in the labs of our collaborators at the University of Oxford. The exact nature of the assays will depend upon the cellular pathways being investigated but are likely to include western blotting, PCRs, etc. Cell culture is fundamental to the project and expertise in this is essential. The candidate will help to develop the necessary preclinical data package to help decide if and how to take these drugs into clinical trial phase.

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications

• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
