RESPONSIBILITIES:

The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of the top research universities in South Africa. The Contracts and Innovation Office at the University supports its researchers in the areas of innovation, intellectual property (IP) protection, commercialisation of the research outputs, and securing funding from external sources. This needs to happen in a safe and legitimate manner with mitigated risks for the researcher and the University, through excellence in the writing, monitoring and execution of contract. In order to achieve this, the incumbent will be expected to:

• act as the Department of Research and Innovation Commercialisation Coordination Manager with a focus on commercialising innovative research outputs. The primary objective will be to ensure that the University's IP is commercialised;

• assist with the implementation of the IP policy of the University;
• help facilitate innovation at the University, including developing capacity to access research and innovation opportunities, and to define and implement routes to market for the University’s technological innovations;
• identify industry leads for potential commercialisation agreements;
• negotiate IP and commercialisation agreements;
• develop and facilitate innovative methods to increase commercialisation activities;

• provide IP commercialisation assessments and coordinate IP and technology transfer partnerships for commercialisation support in the development of market studies, business plans and other related information to be used in the marketing of innovation, for licensing and/or collaboration;

• build strategic networks with other institutions of higher education, public agencies, industry partners and strategic international partners; and

• liaise, where appropriate, with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the National IP Management Office (NIPMO) on IP matters.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• A bachelor’s degree, preferably in science or engineering/technology; and
• two years' relevant technology commercialization experience, preferably in an academic institution, government or a research council.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Knowledge and understanding of South Africa’s policy landscape relating to technology transfer, IP and innovation systems.
• The ability to develop amicable solutions for complex commercialisation issues.
• Meticulous attention to detail, good project management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
• Appropriate language and communication skills.
• Above average interpersonal and facilitation skills.
• Thorough knowledge of the Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research and Development Act, 2008 (Act No. 51 of 2008).

• Experience in technology valuation and marketing.

• Experience in academic technology licensing.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

• A postgraduate degree will be an added advantage.
• At least 2 years' relevant technology commercialization experience, preferably in an academic institution, government or a research council
 

The total remuneration package for this contract position ranges from R559 386 to R693 954 (total cost to company).
